Description

AC Capacitor Discharge Ignition (CDI) Module Overview (to determine if you have an AC cdi or DC cdi see below)

The Capacitor Discharge Ignition (CDI) module, also known as an ignitor, is an essential component used in various gas-powered vehicles including scooters, ATVs, dirt bikes, and go-karts. It is particularly common in modern 4-stroke engines such as GY6/QMB139 or Honda-style engines. Here are the key details:

  • Engine Sizes: It is typically used in medium to large engine sizes, including:
    • 50cc
    • 125cc
    • 150cc
    • Also found in 90cc and 110cc Chinese-made ATVs and dirt bikes.
  • Connector Type: The module features a 6-pin rounded connector.
  • Rev Limiter: Equipped with a rev limiter to control the engine’s maximum revolutions per minute (RPMs), preventing the engine from over-revving.

TO  determine if your scooter uses an AC CDI or a DC CDI, you can follow several steps and check specific indicators. Here are some methods to help you identify the type of CDI your scooter uses:

1. Check the Battery and Electrical System
AC CDI:
Typically, scooters with AC CDI systems do not rely on the battery for ignition. The engine can start and run even if the battery is dead or missing.
The stator generates the necessary AC voltage for the CDI.
DC CDI:
Scooters with DC CDI systems rely on the battery for ignition. If the battery is dead, the scooter will not start.
The CDI module is powered by the battery’s DC voltage.

2. Examine the CDI Module Itself
Labels and Markings:
Look for any labels or markings on the CDI module. Sometimes, the type (AC or DC) may be indicated on the module.
Physical Characteristics:
AC CDI: Generally simpler and may have fewer wires since it directly uses AC voltage from the stator.
DC CDI: May have more complex wiring and components because it converts DC voltage from the battery.

3. Consult the Scooter’s Manual
The user manual or service manual for your scooter will often specify the type of CDI system it uses.
Look for sections detailing the ignition system or electrical specifications.

4. Check the Wiring Diagram
AC CDI: The wiring diagram will show the CDI module connected directly to the stator without involving the battery in the ignition circuit.
DC CDI: The wiring diagram will show the CDI module connected to the battery, with the battery providing power to the ignition system.

5. Measure the Voltage at the CDI Module

Steps:
Turn the Ignition On: Ensure the scooter’s ignition is turned on but the engine is not running.
Multimeter Setup: Set a multimeter to measure DC voltage.
Check Voltage:
DC CDI: There should be a stable DC voltage present at the input to the CDI module (typically 12V from the battery).
AC CDI: Without the engine running, there should be little to no voltage at the CDI module, as it relies on the stator output when the engine is running.

6. Engine Starting Behavior
AC CDI: The scooter can often be kick-started even if the battery is dead because the stator generates the necessary ignition power.
DC CDI: The scooter will not start if the battery is dead or disconnected, as the CDI module needs DC power from the battery.
